There: Keller to get new coach
Friedel
in overdue win; Bocanegra to Leeds?

September
22, 2003 (CSA) Welcome, readers.
This
Weekend’s Matches
Claudio
Reyna: Fulham vs. Manchester City, 9/20
Reyna made way in the matchday 16 for Paul Bosvelt - who missed
the previous game against Aston Villa due to a virus - and did not
play in City’s 2-2 draw at Fulham.
He
is expected to play again for the reserves Monday evening.
Brad
Friedel: Portsmouth vs. Blackburn Rovers, 9/20
After four straight without a win, Blackburn took three points from
the road by beating Portsmouth 2-1 on Saturday.
Friedel
didn’t see much threat on the day, but almost gave up a penalty
when he and Portsmouth striker Yakubu Ayegbini collided. The goalkeeper
dove to claim the ball at the feet of Ayegbini, taking out the forward
- with the referee only giving a corner kick.
Lucas
Neill - set to miss the next three games due to suspension - and
Andrew Cole were the goalscorers for victorious Blackburn, who only
gave up a second-half header from Arjan De Zeeuw late to make things
interesting.
Portsmouth
had consistent pressure in the second half, but didn’t muster too
many chances.
Kasey
Keller: Tottenham Hotspur vs. Southampton, 9/20
Keller and company crashed to a 3-1 loss at home to Southampton,
earning Glenn Hoddle late Sunday a pink slip ending his managerial
stay at White Hart Lane. More on that in news
Keller’s
had a poor day. He had little chance on the last two goals, especially
James Beattie’s superb free kick that the keeper only could get
a piece of before going in. But Beattie’s first of the day can be
laid at the doorstep of Keller.
Keller’s
feet have always been a problem and his failure to make full contact
to clear a ball gave Southampton a corner - from which Beattie planted
a header into the net.
Kevin
Phillips scored the third for Southampton, and the former Sunderland
striker should have had a second of his own as he rounded Keller
only to see Stephen Carr get a piece of the shot, taking it onto
the crossbar.
Keller
had no saves of note in the game, and now faces an uncertain future
long term at Tottenham.
Marcus
Hahnemann: Reading vs. Coventry City, 9/20
Reading dropped their first home game of the season, losing 2-1
against Coventry after taking a first-half lead. Hahnemann could
not repeat his heroics of the past two games, as Coventry just looked
the better of the two sides.
Steven
Cherundolo: Hannover 96 vs. Borussia Monchengladbach, 9/20
Cherundolo picked up an assist for the third straight game in Hannover’s
2-0 victory over Monchengladbach.
The
right back started the attack that ended with him firing in a cross
that neither a defender of the Gladbach keeper claimed, allowing
Thomas Christiansen to finish off the eventual gamewinner in the
first half.
The
clean sheet was not surprisingly the first of the season for Hannover,
who are now sixth in the Bundesliga with 11 points from six games.
Pellegrino
Matarazzo: HSV Amateurs vs. Preussen Munster, 9/20
The defender played the full match as the teams drew 1-1. The team
has struggled to only take six points from eight games so far this
season.
Cory
Gibbs: Chemnitzer FC vs. St. Pauli, 9/20
The defender, playing in front of the back four for St. Pauli, scored
his second goal in three weeks—the gamewinner as the visitors beat
Chemnitzer 2-1. Gibbs also earned his second stint in Kicker’s Team
of the Week for his efforts.
John
van Buskirk: Sportfreunde Siegen vs. Stuttgarter Kickers, 9/20
With Lukin out due to a minor injury, van Buskirk was the only American
at Siegen to play on Saturday—and scored in his first 90 effort
of the season as Siegen routed Stuttgarter 4-0. His third minute
header turned out to be the winning goal for the home team.
Grover
Gibson/Tim Lawson/Michael Mason: Schweinfurt 05 vs. SV Elversberg,
9/20 Russell Payne did not see time as the keeper was left on
the substitutes bench, but the remaining three Americans all went
the full 90 in a 1-1 draw at Schweinfurt. Gibson was booked in the
draw.
Oguchi
Onyewu: La Louviere vs. Mouscron, 9/20
Despite a 2-1 loss at home against Mouscron, Onyewu impressed again
in central defense for La Louviere. In 90 minutes of play, several
reports had Gooch with a superb performance in defense, credited
as being the hosts’ best player in the game.
Tim
Howard: Manchester United vs. Arsenal, 9/21
For about 80 minutes, Arsenal defended with numbers and United couldn’t
unlock the door. Then, things got interesting.
Howard
really had little to do in the scoreless draw Sunday at Old Trafford.
A couple of relatively simple saves, a couple of alert dashes off
his line, and Howard’s day is summed up.
The
stuff outside the YA box gave this game its flavor, albeit a controversial
and tabloid-ready taste. The aftermath will waste ink through England
and other parts of the world for weeks. Patrick Vieira’s two yellow
cards, quick in succession, was highlighted by his kick at Ruud
van Nistelrooy and their reported postmatch shouting duel.
Martin
Keown’s foul on Diego Forlan in the second minute of added time
was definitely a penalty, but his behavior after van Nistelrooy
hit the bar with the resulting spot kick - getting in the Dutchman’s
face - wasn’t needed.
Neither
was the fracas after the final whistles, where he and two other
Arsenal players in the midst of going after van Nistelrooy, made
physical contact with the United striker, but you can read all about
that other places.
United’s
attack is definitely missing the skill of the injured Paul Scholes
and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the need for less foot soldiers and
more creators is easy to see.
The
defense in front of Howard is playing well, with Rio Ferdinand and
Mikael Silvestre keeping Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp pretty
much quiet throughout Sunday’s action.
Conor
Casey: Karlsruher SC vs. SVW Burghausen, 9/21
Relatively quiet in regards to getting chances, Casey put in a decent
effort otherwise in a 0-0 draw at home against Burghausen.
Gregg
Berhalter: RW Oberhausen vs. Energie Cottbus, 9/21
Berhalter had a strong match in defense for Cottbus in their scoreless
draw at Oberhausen. Good in the air and on the ground, the defender
was part of an airtight backline for the visitors to take a point
on the road.
Joe
Enochs: VfL Osnabruck vs. Erzgebirge Aue, 9/21
It looks more and more that Osnabruck will have one year and be
out once again from the 2. Bundesliga. Enochs and company fell at
home 1-0 to Erzgebirge, with the midfielder getting a non-descript
90 minutes in the defeat.
Jacob
Thomas: Schalke 04 Amateurs vs. Eintracht Braunschweig, 9/21
Braunschweig’s unbeaten streak fell Sunday to Schalke’s second team;
a 3-1 defeat in which Thomas went the full 90, adding an assist
on the team’s only goal by Jurgen Rische.
Adam
Skumawitz: Odd Grenland vs. Aalesunds, 9/21
After 70 ineffective minutes, Skumawitz was pulled from a 3-0 loss
at Grenland.
Luchi
Gonzalez/Leighton O’Brien: IF Sylvia vs. Bodens BK, 9/21
Despite a pair of goals from O’Brien, Bodens fell 4-3 to last Sylvia
on Sunday. Both the midfielder and Gonzalez went 90 in the loss.
O’Brien
tied the match up in the 31st minute from the spot, but his second
game in second-half injury time to close his team’s deficit to a
single goal.
Reports
in Sweden have O’Brien being looked at by several First Division
clubs, and also have Bodens to take two of his Seattle Sounders
teammates - Preston Burpo and Andrew Gregor - set for trials in
the upcoming weeks.
Robbie
Russell: Sogndal vs. Viking, 9/22
Sogndal failed to hold a two-goal lead as Viking scored twice in
the last 21 minutes to draw even at 2-2. Russell went 90 minutes
in the tie.
News,
Rumors, and Potential Half-Truths As noted earlier, Glenn Hoddle
was fired by Tottenham on Sunday after the team’s latest defeat
gave Spurs their worst start in the Premiership. Since the start
of the calendar year, Tottenham has only won six out of 24 games.
Director
of Football Operations David Pleat is the interim manager going
into Wednesday’s Carling Cup match. Possible replacements are flying
around: Chief among the names are Celtic manager Martin O’Neill,
Radomir Antic, Blackburn’s Graeme Souness, and Charlton’s Alan Curbishley.
O’Neill,
of course, coached Keller at Leicester City. Souness and Rangers’
Alex McLeish already have put out the customary denial of interest.
As
this pertains to Keller, he will need of course to impress any new
manager at White Hart Lane to prevent a new goalkeeping purchase.
Hoddle stuck by Keller through thick and thin after he took the
#1 role from Neil Sullivan (now at Chelsea). He probably has until
the winter signing period in January before any new keeper would
be brought in.
The
English tabloids linked Fire defender Carlos Bocanegra to Leeds
United on Sunday. There are some positives and negatives to this
rumor’s validity. “Breaking the story” was beat writer Alan Nixon,
who has an excellent track record with material coming out of Elland
Road.
On
the other side of the ledger, his story has Leeds talking with MLS
- but Bocanegra’s contract is done come January 1, so unless there
has been some kind of secret contract extension, he would be a free
agent and any talks with MLS would be immaterial.
Some
good news this weekend: Eddie Lewis has started some light training
(running), and will only miss a couple of weeks with his knee injury.
This
Week’s Games
Kasey
Keller: Coventry City vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 9/24
It’s likely Keller will start in this Carling Cup (former Worthington
Cup) match at Coventry in Pleat’s first game as Spurs’ interim manager.
Marcus
Hahnemann: Oxford United vs. Reading, 9/24 Reading will want
to wash the taste of their weekend loss out, and a trip to face
Oxford United Wednesday evening could be the appropriate tonic for
what ails ‘em. Hahnemann should remain in net for this one.
